How to create a sustainability strategy
For manufacturers & suppliers to the construction & infrastructure sectors
Thinking of pursuing a sustainability strategy within your business, but don’t know where to start? Manufacturers and suppliers to the construction, interiors and infrastructure sectors currently have an opportunity to build a competitive advantage by developing a sustainability focus.
The desire to achieve environmental ratings for buildings and infrastructure continues to grow. As this momentum increases, businesses with environmentally labelled products and those who build sustainability initiatives into operational aspects of their business, are poised to tap into the gathering pace of this sector.
State government infrastructure projects over $30 million are mandated to hold an IS Rating. This is an Infrastructure Sustainability rating designed to reduce the environmental impact of our built environment. Commercial construction, commercial interiors, communities and (soon to include) residential homes can choose to be Green Star certified for the same purpose. Both ISCA and the GBCA who run the sustainability rating programs in Australia are working to increase transparency in supply chains and build awareness of the low carbon products available for use in projects. What does this mean for manufacturers and suppliers? It’s the opportunity to place your brand in front of Tier 1 builders, to gain product specification and retain that specification throughout the supply chain, based on the points you can contribute to an IS rated or Green Star rated project.
Having a business-wide sustainability focus is a multi-faceted strategy that holds a level of complexity. The beauty of this is, it’s a commitment that’s time consuming for your competitors to imitate. If market leadership or category leadership is your objective, begin by asking yourself these questions. Why are we doing this? How can we lead by example? How can we embed this mindset into our culture? And if you’d like to know ‘Where do we begin?’ drop us a line, we’re happy to start the conversation with you.
